Drug abuse rates are high in the state of Oregon. According to the ONDCP, “In 2009-2010, Oregon was one of the top ten states for rates of drug use in several categories, including:”
- Among persons age 12 or older
- Past month illicit drug use
- Past month marijuana use
- Past month illicit use of drugs other than marijuana
- Past-year non-medical use of pain relievers
- Illicit drug dependence
- Among young adults age 18-25
- Past month illicit drug use
- Past month marijuana use
- Past month illicit use of drugs other than marijuana
- Past-year non-medical use of pain relievers
- Illicit drug dependence
- Among adolescents age 12-17
- Past-year cocaine use
In addition, “the rate of drug-induced deaths in Oregon exceeded the national average” at 576. It also exceeded the number of Oregonians who died as a result of motor vehicle accidents (391) and from firearms (417). “Approximately 12.63 percent of Oregon residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs” which is higher than most states as well as the national average at 8.82 percent. Though marijuana accounts for about 35 percent of the state’s substance abuse treatment admissions, other drugs are being abused in high numbers as well.
Stimulants account for about 28 percent of substance abuse treatment admissions even though these have been on the decline for the past few years. Still, there is a strong presence of cocaine and other types of stimulant abuse in the state which makes the fact that these admissions are dwindling problematic. In addition, heroin primary drug treatment admissions have been rising since 2005 where they were just below 15 percent of all admissions. Now, they are over 21 percent of admissions and growing. The abuse of any of the drugs listed above can lead to long-term addiction syndromes as well as extremely harmful health effects.
Even worse, many individuals in Oregon may not be able to afford treatment for their drug addictions. The United States Census Bureau lists 16.2 percent of Oregonian residents as living below the poverty level which is more than the national average (15.4). The state also has a lower median household income and a lower per capita money income in the past 12 months. It is for these individuals that free rehab centers exist.
In cities like Portland, Phoenix, Baker City, and Eugene, residents can find effective treatment for little or even no cost if they are struggling financially and especially as a result of drug abuse issues. It is likely that someone who begins abusing illicit drugs and starts to take them chronically will see most of their money disappear to obtaining more of the drug. Treatment centers like these exist so that patients can receive the same kind of treatment that exists in more expensive facilities even if they cannot afford them.
Therapy, medication, financial and legal help, drug testing, and aftercare options are all a part of addiction treatment at a free rehab facility. Any of the facilities below offer these options at no cost, so choose the center that best meets your needs today and start your recovery as soon as possible.
